Multistate outbreak of _E. coli_ O157:H7 infections linked to romaine lettuce
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Case count update
-----------------
Since the last update on 2 May 2018, 28 more ill people were added to this outbreak.

As of 8 May 2018, 149 people infected with the outbreak strain of _E. coli_ O157:H7 have been reported from 29 states. Illnesses started on dates ranging from 13 Mar 2018 to 25 Apr 2018. Ill people range in age from 1 to 88 years, with a median age of 30. 65 percent of ill people are female. Of 129 people with information available, 64 (50 percent) have been hospitalized, including 17 people who developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure. One death was reported from California.

Total 149

Illnesses that occurred after 17 Apr 2018, might not yet be reported due to the time it takes between when a person becomes ill with _E. coli_ and when the illness is reported. This takes an average of 2 to 3 weeks.

Investigation update
--------------------
State and local health officials continue to interview ill people to ask about the foods they ate and other exposures they had before they became ill. Of the 112 people interviewed, 102 (91 percent) reported eating romaine lettuce in the week before their illness started. This percentage is significantly higher than results from a survey of healthy people in which 46 percent reported eating romaine lettuce in the week before they were interviewed.

Information collected to date indicates that romaine lettuce from the Yuma growing region could be contaminated with _E. coli_ O157:H7 and could make people sick.

This investigation is ongoing, and CDC will provide more information as it becomes available.

[The numbers continue to grow in this outbreak, the largest USA EHEC outbreak since 2006, with 28 more ill people from 12 states added to this investigation since the last update on 2 May 2018. 4 more states have reported ill people: Florida, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Texas.

With a 50 percent hospitalization rate and 17/149 (11.4 percent) developing hemolytic uremic syndrome, it is possible that this particular strain may produce higher levels of Shiga toxin or a subtype of toxin that is more injurious to the target organs. - Mod.LL
