ISTITUTIONAL ACTIVITY. Guidelines for Animal Assisted Interventions

ISTITUTIONAL ACTIVITY. Guidelines for Animal Assisted Interventions (AAI)

At present, in Italy AAI have been recognized as official care by a Legislative Decree (DL.vo issued on February 28th 2003), however there is no specific legislation regulating them, which poses serious problems in terms of safety and protection of humans subjects. Indeed, those who can benefit from AAI are frail subjects and are mainly represented by children as they are often extremely trusting and may easily achieve a level of intimacy with animals, as well as elderly per- sons. In AAI, the activity performed by the “animal therapist” towards the “human patient” is very complex and to be successful, above all, should entail the contribution of many professional figures.

Scientific evidence and sound methodological instruments are fundamental requirements for Animal Assisted Interventions to become innovative instruments for health care. The Section of Behavioral Neurosciences at the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS), together with theCentro di Referenza Nazionale "Interventi assistiti dagli animali" Centro di Referenza Nazionale "Interventi assistiti dagli animali" and the Ministry of health are now involved in promotic Courses for professionals (veterinaries, physicians, psychologists, ethologists, physical therapists), as well as Guidelines.

On March 25, 2015, have been signed l’accordo tra il Governo, le Regioni e le Province autonome di Trento e di Bolzano sul documento recante “Linee guida nazionali per gli Interventi Assistiti con gli Animali (IAA)”. In the section “Allegati” of this page you can find lthe PDF version of thel document.

Research projects carried out by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (See SectionProgetti) may become an example of scientific and methodological standards for a good practice of AAI.
