The Italian research and cooperation for a world without malaria
Meeting of the Italian Malaria Network, Rome, Istituto Superiore di Sanità, 19th, 20th January 2017

The recent international success in globally reducing malaria morbidity and mortality must not overlook the fact that this disease is still an unbearable burden for human health worldwide. Resistance of the Plasmodium parasites to frontline drugs and of the mosquito vectors to insecticides is arising and spreading, being a serious threat to the present goals of eliminating and eradicating this ancient disease.

The Italian Malaria Network, joining the Inter-University Center for Malaria Research and the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, coordinates from several years the activities of over 20 teams active across the country in the fundamental and applied research and in training on the biology of the malaria parasite and its insect and human hosts, in entomology, epidemiology, drug discovery and clinical trials.

The Italian Malaria network announces its annual meeting, that will be held in Rome, at Istituto Superiore di Sanità, on January 19th and 20th 2017.

The meeting aims to be an occasion to discuss the current challenges in understanding, controlling and eradicating malaria, the recent research ongoing in the Italian laboratories and the cooperation of the Italian malariology with endemic countries, chiefly Africa.

The scientific programme of the meeting, whose official language is English, will include keynote lecture(s), thematic sessions and ample time for poster presentation and discussion.

Researchers are invited to submit abstracts reporting their current work, with a special invitation to younger members of the research teams. Please indicate whether abstracts are intended for poster sessions or for selection by the Meeting Scientific/organizing Committee as oral presentation. In this case please indicate one of the following broad thematic areas: 1- Host (human/mosquito)-parasite interplay/Pathogenesis/Drug and vaccine targets; 2- Transmission/Vectors; 3- Epidemiology/Control/Field studies.

Information on abstract submission and meeting registration

Abstracts (maximum 250 words) have to be emailed at as an attached .doc or .docx file.
Abstracts must indicate if they are intended for poster or submitted for oral presentation, in this case indicating for which of the above three thematic areas.
The deadline for abstract submission is October 31st 2016.

The registration form, meeting details and scientific programme will be available on this site as soon as possible.
The deadline for registration is November 30th 2016.
