Who we are

The FAO Reference Center for Veterinary Public Health is an integral part of the Department of Veterinary Public Health and Food Safety, Istituto Superiore di Sanità, directed by Umberto Agrimi.

Paolo Pasquali has been appointed as Director of the center. He is supported by Renata Borroni as Deputy Director.

For the implementation of its activities the FAO Reference Center takes advantage, mainly but not exclusively, of the competence of experts from the Departments of Veterinary Public Health and Food Safety, Infectious, Parasitic & Immunomediated Diseases, Environment and Primary Prevention, and of the National Center for Epidemiology, Surveillance and Health Promotion of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità.

The activity of the FAO Reference Centre for Veterinary Public Health is mainly focused on the following topics:

  • Training programs on specific topics (zoonoses), particularly aimed at young veterinary women, from developing countries, preferably but not exclusively, in the Mediterranean area.
  • Capability building focused on: a) implementation of screening programs and strategies for the eradication / control of animal diseases of greatest impact on public health and livestock production; b)implementation of quality systems for testing laboratories and for providers of proficiency testings
  • Research on various topics related to zoonoses and veterinary public health
  • Communication chiefly aimed at veterinarians, veterinary technicians and breeders'...

About FAO Reference Centres

FAO Reference Centres for animal health are institutions designated by the Director-General to provide specific, independent technical/scientific advice on issues related to FAO’s mandate.
The Reference Centres designated by FAO are centres of excellence in providing scientific and technical expertise, diagnostic services, laboratory and field training, in coordinating research and developmental studies, and in contributing to FAO projects.

FAO has identified 18 technical areas in the field of animal health for which collaboration with Reference Centres is currently required.

Mission of VPH FAO Reference Centre

The Centre is aiming to contribute in providing expertise in sustainable capacity building and training across different facets of veterinary public health (VPH). The Centre will focus especially, even not limited to, the Mediterranean and Balkan Region.

In particular the Centre will:

  • contribute to the improvement of disease diagnostic capability;

    • provide technical expert services;

      • advise on surveillance and control on zoonotic agents, such as Brucella spp., Cryptosporidium spp., Echinococcus spp., Escherichia coli, Hepatitis E Virus, Mycobacterium bovis, Norovirus, prions, Rotavirus;

        • provide assistance and initiatives with regard to public awareness for zoonoses;
