Trichinella spp. - Three analytical methods were developed, validated and accredited and are available as part of the services provided by the EURLP to NRLs for parasites: two ELISA test for the detection of anti-Trichinella antibodies in human and swine sera, respectively, and a Multiplex PCR method for the identification of Trichinella parasites at species level. Moreover, the magnetic stirrer method for pooled sample digestion for the detection of Trichinella in fresh meat (Commission Regulation No 2075/2005, see Section "Documents - EU Regulations"), was also accredited.
Anisakidae worms - EURLP developed, validated and accredited a PCR/RFLP method and a Multiplex PCR for the identification at species level of parasites of the family...

In July 2006, the EURLP was accredited according to the ISO 17025:2005 by the Italian accreditation body, SINAL, now ACCREDIA. The accreditation is submitted to a convention lasting 4 years, and recognises the technical competence of the laboratory to perform specific analytical methods. The accreditation was renewed in July 2010 and 2014 by ACCREDIA.
In May, 2014, the EURLP was also accredited by ACCREDIA as Proficiency Testing Provider, according to the ISO 17043:2010.
Visit to NRLs - Eleven NRLs for parasites (Bulgaria and Cyprus in 2007, Romania and Ireland in 2008, Latvia and Slovak Republic in 2009, Estonia and Greece in 2010, France in 2011, Czech Republic in 2012 and Germany in 2013) were visited up to now by the head of the EURLP.
Training for Personnel of NRLs and from developing countries - A total of 76 persons (2 in the course of 2006, 14 in the course of 2007, 4 in the course of 2008, 21 in the course of 2009, 11 in the course of 2010, 8 in the course of 2011, 4 in the course of 2012 and 12 in the course of 2013, respectively), have spent from 1 day up to 6 months at the EURLP laboratories for training activities in the field of foodborne zoonotic parasites.
Organisation of workshops - The EURLP...
Guidelines - Three guidelines, "Guideline for the detection of Trichinella larvae at the slaughterhouse in a quality assurance system", "Guideline for the identification and development of sampling methods and design of suitable protocols for monitoring of Trichinella infection in indicator species" and “Guidelines for the validation of apparatuses for the detection of Trichinella larvae” are published in the EURLP web site (see section “Documents - EURLP Documents”).
Standardization of methods for the detection of parasites in food - Harmonization and standardization of diagnostic methods is one of the tasks of the EURLP. In this context, a EURLP representative participates since 2007 to the annual joint meetings of the...
Several research activities have been and/or are carried out since the designation of the EURLP, namely:
- Trichinella spp.: the identification of intraspecific genetic variability of Trichinella spiralis and T. britovi, and the evaluation of the use of serology to monitor Trichinella infections in wild boars and/or red foxes;
- Toxoplasma gondii: the identification of oocyst stage specific proteins of this protozoa;
- Anisakidae: the identification and development of analytical methods for the speciation of parasites belonging to this family;
- Echinococcus spp: the identification and development of analytical methods for the speciation of parasites belonging to this genus;
- the barcoding of zoonotic and non...
