Biographical Notes

Dr. Cacciò has more than 20 years of experience in the molecular and genetic characterization of parasites. In 1996 he joined the Laboratory of Parasitology of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, where he carried out studies on genetic characterization of parasite populations of protozoa belonging to Cryptosporidium, Babesia and Giardia genera, with the aim of elucidating the epidemiology of these infections and the evolutionary relationships among species. He has been involved in several projects funded by National and International bodies.
He has published more than 60 papers on international scientific journals and books.

Research Activity

Cryptosporidium: molecular detection of human and animal infections. Identification of highly polymorphic markers for genotyping. Studies on the prevalence and genotypes of oocysts found in water samples.

Giardia: molecular identification of genotypes responsible for human infection. Development of new molecular tools. Studies on the zoonotic role of pets. Studies on the prevalence and genotypes of cysts found in water samples.

Babesia: molecular identification of species/genotypes responsible for human infection in Europe. Studies of the possible animal reservoirs and vectors. Development of new molecular assay. Phylogeny and evolution of the genus.
