The Library of the Italian National Institute of Health (ISS) supports the Institute's activities since 1934, the year of ISS foundation. It is the reference library for biomedical research in Italy and specialises in the scientific documentation in the fields of biomedicine and public health.

The Library holdings consist mainly of periodicals and include many thousands of journal titles in print and/or electronic format. Monographs (about 200,000) are arranged according to the classification systems of the National Library of Medicine and of the Library of Congress.

The Library holdings also include publications by national and international institutions and organizations, pharmacopoeias, official publications, health legislation textbooks and grey literature.

The Library regularly acquires both bibliographic and full-text databases, both online and on cd-rom.

Special collections include a series of valuable Rare books (XVI-XIX centuries), as well as a collection of texts on Italy's mineral waters.

The Library also collects and disseminates the World Health Organization publications it receives as the Italian WHO Documentation Centre.
