Prevention programs

The new strategy for fighting AIDS indicated by the European Union, for the 2009-2013 quinquennium, contains principles and general measures to contrast the spread of HIV/AIDS and indicates specific modalities of intervention to be implemented by the Member Countries. Such strategy invites the key players, including national authorities and non governmental organizations, i) to improve knowledge, in particular among young people, on the modalities of transmission and prevention of HIV/AIDS; ii) to dedicate a special attention to immigrants coming from Countries with a high HIV prevalence and incidence in order to educate them on prevention and on access to testing, available therapies and counseling, and iii) improving health and social policies focusing on the most exposed populations, with particular regard to the human rights and fighting against HIV/AIDS-associated discrimination and prejudice.
During the XVII International AIDS Conference, which was held in 2008 in Mexico City, scientists indicated that unprecedented efforts are needed to prevent HIV transmission. In fact, based on recent epidemiological data and of the scientific evidence indicating the validity of some prevention strategies, it has become apparent that to be effective, prevention strategies will have to combine biomedical activity with social and health intervention policies based on the modern educational strategies.
In this framework the National Center AIDS coordinates prevention programs funded by the European Community, the Italian Ministry of Health and the Italian Ministry of Interior.

Project: “Italy in Europe: a National study based on the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) indicators”.
